Is a Bark Collar the Right Solution For Your Dog?

In the most simplistic words, a bark collar can be used to redirect a dog that persists on barking constantly.  The majority of dogs bark for a reason, such as protection. Other dog’s just bark because they feel they can, such as nuisance barking.  Just like people, dog’s can bark for hours on end.  There may not be any reason for your dog to bark.  He may notice something in the grass, be bothered by thunder, or like to bark at the cars, whatever the cause, he just won’t quiet down.

There are many different ways you can solve the barking problem that your dog has.  The best opportunity to use these techniques, which mirror other training behavior, is when your dog is small and hasn’t yet formed the habit of barking at everything.  If that time has passed, and you are now facing a older dog that barks nonstop, the first thing you do is research the reason they bark.

If you find your dog is barking out of boredom, that can be easily fixed with spending quality time with him or her, buy them toys, and other easy ways to keep them active.  If you find that your dog feels very anxious, you can find ways to comfort them, such as a blanket or bed to feel safe with.  If you notice that your dog is a very vocal dog, training will be pretty hard, but still could happen.

Excessive barking is one of the most common reasons that people get rid of their dogs to shelters.  It is very sad to give away your family pet for something that was not corrected when he was a pup.  It is possible to teach a dog not to bark even when older.  It takes patience and exertion on your part, certainly, but it can be done.  By purchasing a bark collar, you will notice immediate results out of your dog’s behavior.

Bark Collars shouldn’t take the place of the communication between you and your dog.  It is achievable to use both training and the bark collar by applying the collar only while your gone or if he is outdoors.  Collars come in several styles, but two lead the pack.  The spray collar uses a citronella based spray bottle that hits your dog in the face when the sensor picks up the vibrations caused by barking. The e-collar, or electric collar, uses the similar type of prongs, but sends a slight electric shock to the dog when barking persist past a specific time frame.  The intensity is compared to a static shock that you get during the cold weather if you rub your feet on the carpet.

Every bark collar is made for many types of dogs and come in a variety of styles, models, and styles.  Make sure you talk with a specialist if you are skeptical of which collar to purchase.  There are no bark collars suitable for a dog below the age of six months or below three pounds. Only one collar goes small enough to three pounds; the majority start at seven pounds.  You should be able to put two fingers in between the collar and your pets neck.  Using the collar begin your retraining of your dog.  When your dog starts to bark continuously, say your verbal commands with a strong voice.  If he does not listen to your command the collar will give him the shock. Eventually, your dog will put your voice and the shock together and listen to you the first time.  If they comply, compliment them and think about providing a treat.

Don’t leave your dog in a collar for more than eight hours on any given day, and remember, the collar is most adequate when combined with your involvement.
